Catch Fish And Have Fun Outdoors

By Carl Drotsky

Bonding with children can be both educational and relaxing. There are many activities that parents can consider to connect with their children. It is especially men that find it difficult to find activities that will be fun for boys and girls. While most men like to go fishing to unwind, the whole family can join in the activity. Fishing is an activity which provides quality time and it also creates the opportunity to teach children to enjoy the sun and fresh air. Sometimes no one catches a fish, but the fun and experience brings the family closer.

Fishing is a family activity that does not require a lot of gear. It is as easy as buying small poles and turning them into fishing rods. This will not cost you a lot. It could be exciting for a child to buy a small kit for the day's fishing. Otherwise one can search the house and garage for the necessary gear. You might find it useful to teach the children the basics of fishing at home. You can demonstrate setting up the fishing rod or pole and casting it in your back yard using only a weight. It will be fun to learn casting and when you finally reach your picnic spot they will be ready to set themselves up for the day.

A bobber, a small weight, line and a hook is all you need to add to the fishing pole or rod. The best way to teach a child to fish is by using a bobber. With the bobber you can demonstrate how it disappears completely if a fish takes the bait. You can also demonstrate that wind and the movement of water is not a fish pulling or taking the bait. If you don't teach them these basics, they might reel in every time the water moves or the wind blows.

It will also be helpful to teach the children how to bait their own hook. It might be difficult for children to put a live worm on the hook. If they dread the idea, you can consider using rubber worms. However, if they catch fish with rubber worms they may not be as lucky as they would have been with the real worms. Also teach your children about safety. Teach them to look where everyone is before they cast. This will ensure that everyone is safe from flying hooks.

Although you are doing this activity as a family to have fun, it is also important that everyone obeys the safety rules. If you are going out on a boat, you should not take children that are not old enough to understand how dangerous it can be to fish on the water. Any person will only be allowed to get on the boat if wearing a life jacket. Before you go out with the boat, you must go over the rules first. If they don't obey the rules, you must go ashore immediately. If your children see that you are serious about safety, they will obey and make the fishing trip fun for everyone.
