Barramundi Fishing

By Paul Collery

Barramundi fishing is one of the favorite fishing pursuits of many Aussie Fishermen. Not only are Barra famous for their impressive somersaults when on the line but also they're one of the better eating fish found in Australian coastal systems.

Name: Barramundi, Barra (Lates calcarifer)

Seasons: Barramundi fishing is best when the water is warmer in North Australian waters. From around September to around christmas the weather "builds up" when the air and water temperatures and humidity levels increase. The other best time of year for Barra fishing is the "run off" when the wet season winds down from late March and the water is running off the flood fields. In some areas it isn't legal to purposively catch Barramundi over the wet season.

Barramundi Fishing Hot Spots

The Kimberley streams eg the Fitzroy near Broome, the Pentecost and King rivers near Wyndham and the Ord, Victoria and Keep flood plains near Kununurra are popular for Barra fishing. The Ord flood plains also being known for large Barramundi over a meter in length.

The majority of the Northern N.T coastal flood plains and estuaries are great for Barramundi fishing. The Katherine and Daly flood plains flowing to the west coast are well liked by fishos chasing giant Barramundi. The Daly hosts a couple of specific Barra fishing competitions each year. The Mary, Wildman and Adelaide flood plains and the South and East Alligator flood plains flow to the north near Kakadu and are easily reached Barra fishing flood plains.

Arnhemland is a big Indigeneous area in the north east of the Territory. Registration is needed to enter this region, which is difficult to get for free travelling. The Liverpool System coast region at Maningrida is one of the finest Barramundi fishing areas in the country and a top class guided fishing and accommodation facility operates here giving fishermen access to the superb Barramundi fishing of the area.

The Tiwi Islands near Darwin are also great for Barra fishing. Again the islands are only accessible with registration and very good guided fishing business operates on Melville Island.

On the west coast of the NT the McArthur and the Roper systems accessed from near Borroloola are fantastic Barramundi fishing locations but again are quite isolated..

Queensland is also a Barramundi fishing favourite. The Albert and Leichardt systems near Burktown and Karumba at the base of the Gulf of Carpentaria are fantastic Barra rivers.

All of the sytems of Cape York are also productive Barramundi rivers particularly the west coast streams like the Jackson, Cotterel, Skardon and Jardin.

These are just a few of a number of fantastic Barramundi fishing options in the North. Do not make the mistake of focusing solely on Barramundi as the bountiful tropical waters of the north are home to over 50 more frequently caught sports fish. Jewfish, Salmon, Cobia, Cod, Groper, Coral Trout, Giant and Golden Trevally, Snapper, Tuna and Mangove Jack just to mention a few.
