Give Yourself An Edge And Put A Fishing Snap Swivels On Your Line

By Cathleen Lara

A fishing snap swivel is a specialized form of equipment fitted towards the end of a line. It is a small device usually consisting of two rings connected to a pivoting point. It is commonly made of stainless steel or brass. The pivoting joint is usually shaped like a small ball and may incorporate ball-bearings to assist its swivel motion.

The devices are mainly used to assist a fishing line to unwind or untwist during retrieval. This prevents tangles. This feature is especially helpful for anglers that use monofilament lines. Another benefit is that the devices can be fixed to a line in a way that stops The sinker from slipping far from the hook.

The device is typically fixed to a line as follows. The length of line attached to the reel is tied by a knot to one end of the device. Next, the length of line that terminates with the hook is fixed to the other end of the device.

The devices come in a range of sizes ranging from a few millimeters in length up to several centimeters in length. They are mostly black or brass in color. However, a contemporary trend is for modern swivels to experiment with color, with red and blue being particularly popular.

Some anglers recommend against using snap swivels when targeting heavy or hard-fighting fish. This is because fixing a swivel onto a line introduces an additional weak spot to the line, increasing the risk of some form of line failure.

In summary, fishing snap swivels can be a helpful godsend. They also come with three rings connected to a pivoting point. These three-way devices provide an extra connection point. This permits an additional lure or extra length of line to be fixed to the main line. This setup is favored when targeting certain species.
