The Fishing GPS

By Glene Kaene

Do you want to catch a lot of fish? Of course you do! If you are like me, you want to have all of the latest and greatest equipment. I get very competitive with my friends and family. Maximum fish count is important in my book, so investing in the top tech is a priority.

But with today's technology, you can go beyond that level of professionalism with GPS technology on your side. With fishing GPS systems, you already have the advantage over these professionals because of the ease in finding more fish to catch.

One thing I like to do is go online and get some locations that other anglers have discovered. The community is great at sharing their favorite spots. Another great feature, is that you can save your locations in realtime, so you can come back and catch more fish. It is great at mapping out the hot spots.

Once you get the hang of it, you will start to use all the features. One of my favorites is the waypoint. You can mark out your path, and keep track of exactly where you have been and the time of each location. Depending on the model or make, you can get even more details of your route.

If marking is too tedious, the software that is often included with fishing GPS systems can connect to the Internet and download the freshest maps containing the latest waypoints covering the claimed area. It is also accurate in keeping track of your location even if you are in the middle of the sea. It uses pinpoint positioning and triangulation so the satellite signals effectively plot the location.

My first fishing GPS unit ran me about two hundred dollars. That was several years ago, and now you can get a top of the line unit for about three hundred dollars. If you want to save some money, you can get a good model, without a lot of features for one hundred and fifty dollars or less. Most if not all of the current models are water proof.

If you are a avid angler, definitely purchase a top of the line model. Get a big screen, that is easy on the eyes. If you are going to spend hours and hours in the water, you will regret getting a cheap model. Spend a few extra bucks, and get a model that will last.

Modern fishing GPS devices are also recommended for the keeping because they are more accurate when it comes to fish finding with an accuracy of three meters as opposed to the fifteen meters accuracy of older devices. Higher accuracy means that you can locate the fish quicker and spend more time catching fish. No matter what types of fishing GPS systems you choose, Fishing GPS units of just about any kind help a lot more than having none at all.
