What Are Trolling Motors? A Great New Tool For The Fisherman

By Trey Hodges

A fisherman must always have readily available on hand a secondary source of propulsion. It prepares him for anything including loss of power in the main engine. But if you ask any experienced fisherman the question - what are trolling motors?, he will say that it is a propulsion system that gives you the ability to move silently and hunt more fish.

A lot of trolling motors are electrically powered. Anyone would expect the motor to be gas powered but the battery powered device has been in existence since 1934. In that year, a patent was applied for an outboard motor using a powerful electric motor.

The way how a trolling motor works hasn't changed that much since it was invented. A powerful electric motor is directly connected to the propeller. In a gas powered outboard, the engine has to be above water. In a battery operated unit, the electric motor is thoroughly sealed so that it works completely immersed in water. The submerged design allows the propeller to be mounted directly on the motor's shaft thereby eliminating the complicated linkage typical of a gas powered outboard. The submerged design is also a way of cooling the main components of the drive.

An electric motor operates a lot quieter than gas powered engines. This is the reason why a battery powered trolling motor has stealth that is comparable to rowing. By being able to fish quietly, one can land more game and catch even the most elusive ones.

There are models of motors that are fully controllable while the owner is busy catching fish. These models have foot pedals that allow the owner to steer and adjust the motor's speed. The fisher has more opportunities of fishing with a foot controlled motor.

One can choose between a transom mounted and a bow mounted motor. If you have a smaller boat without plenty of room then a rear mounted design is more appropriate. For bigger boats, it is better to have bow mounted units because it is actually more maneuverable. However it is a more complicated design than a transom mounted unit.

It is advantageous to be able to move quietly as needed when fishing. So to answer what are trolling motors?, it makes a fisher able to move stealthily and easily steer the boat. When one's hands are busy operating the fishing rod, pedal controls make it possible to fully control the boat with the feet.
