The Boating Economy. The Other Side.

By Capn Bill

In an earlier article I discussed the terrible economy and the sad state of affairs in boating and fishing. Well that is half of the story.... but not everyone is impacted in the same way when the economy turns sour.

If you are still employed with that great job and are making that super salary then this can be a great time to get into boating. This applies also if you were able to bank a nice savings account before the economy went down.

Wow, you picked a really great time. The old saying buy when they are cheap and sell when the price is high could never be more appropriate. The price of boats is really attractive for buyers right now ..... and won't be turning around for at least a while.

If you decide to make a purchase you will need to think about those responsible and necessary items. You know, like insurance, safety equipment, dock fees, fuel, hauling out fees, and bottom cleaning.

If you are prepared then let me make a few suggestions.

1. Don't rush. Take your time as there is no hurry. There are a lot of pressured owners/sellers out there right now, so shop around.

2. Make a decision and stick with it. After you have decided the kind, model, year, size, color, etc.... stick with it as jumping around and changing your mind only causes you to lose control of the buying situation.

3. Now shop only for that boat that you decided on ..... don't get sidetracked by all the others ..again control of the situation is paramount in this type of deal.

4. Now comes the decision on how you will pay for it. Choose between commercial lenders/banks or owner financing. I am willing to bet that the comfortable dealing combined with the lower interest rates and most times very attractive terms will make owner financing the winner every time.

5. Now choose that interest rate that you will find comfortable, combined with the down payment you want and the terms you want.

6. Search out 5 or 6 boats (easy to do right now) that you really like and simply call, mail, or email the owner. Explain to the owner the whole enchilada, you know, the terms, price and conditions.

Guess what ???? I promise you at least one of them will call you up and say SOLD !!

These are not normal times and normally this might not be ridiculously easy and simple. But these are not normal times so try it and get surprised.

Name your tune cause right now you are in the catbird seat. That is what my granddaddy used to say.

Is this the opportunity to be crazy ??? Probably not .... but with a little common sense and a polite attitude ..... I would bet the farm that a real bargain is out there waiting for you ....

What are you waiting for? So get excited and go get it !
