When The Time And Situation Is Suitable, You'll Catch Me By The Waterside

By Jon Izzard

The top news today is that my bed doesn't loath me. I'm not positive about the cause of the shoulder stiffness still, but the issue with my neck is Cricket Ache caused by nodding off in front of the television whilst watching the Ashes and being incapable to sustain wakefulness. At least I did manage to see the termination of the match. It will not be happening again, I am very much a Test match fan and won't be bothering to remain up for the limited over cricket. Besides, this being a Friday, in the coming weeks I'll be aiming to get an early start at work so that I can bunk off in the afternoon to go angling.

What with the present Mrs Izzard resuming work after an extended sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in 2 weeks, and the prospect of the weather turning milder through February and March, the siren song of the canal towpath will very likely be irresistible now that I have decided to update the fishing tackle and begin fishing again.

When I was checking through my fishing tackle recently, I came across an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which probably was the last occasion I went fishing. It appears an awfully long time and yet I remember it clearly, a lovely day in June when I went for a day's fishing on the Thames at Walton, and I caught my single ever barbel. This may seem strange, but the majority of the angling I did as a boy was on a little lake in the town where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.

Then, I did not have a much fishing tackle as I did not have very much money and yet I still have most of it from then. I find it astonishing that even when I used to earn a lot of money, I never really thought about fishing or spending some money and stcoking up on some really great fishing tackle and having more time by the water.

When I do go back, I will need to shell out some change\money, initially getting a rod licence and becoming a member of the Birmingham Anglers Association who manage fishing on the canals close to here, then I will need some new fishing tackle as mine is elderly and most likely illegal now, especially the hooks which all appear to have barbs which I am fairly sure aren't allowed now.

I cannot wait to go back, though I'm not ashamed to admit that I was always and certainly will be now, a very fair weather fisher, so I will need dry, warm conditions. It doesn't have to be clear, just not damp and chilly and if it's a Friday after the present Mrs Izzard has returned to work (and I'm legal) then the chances are I am going to go fishing. Brilliant.
