A Fabulous Scheme For A Telly Programme To Feature Maggot Drowning And Restore The Chat-Show

By Paul Rawnsley

I have had a brilliant plan for a television programme. Following on from Robert Llewellyn's (Kryton in Red Dwarf) superb Car Pool, in which he talks to celebrities while he gives them a lift somewhere, I have a vision of Tackle Out - a talk-show where the host shoves off angling with a well known face and they sit by a gravel pit and natter about this and that.

Much of the interview must of course be about whatever the person is plugging, a film, book etc, but the subjects could drift around areas that person likes to go angling, where is the best place they have been angling and what their favourite fishing tackle is, where they get it and their angling history and tales.

fishing has previously provided a useful backdrop to a television show, in recent years Rich Hall had a programme sitting in a boat, on a lake with his mate, doing comedy. And Robson Green has had a programme about extreme angling in various parts of the world. There have also been cult figures to come from TV shows about angling, most notable of course is the tremendous Rex Hunt from the Fishing Adventures, but in this country, John Wilson stands out.

The programme could be quite widely appealing. Considering the potential guests who are known to be enthusiastic when it comes to the piscatorial pursuits; Jeremy Paxman would be interesting, Billy Connelly would be hilarious, maybe some real feeling in having a programme where Gazza could talk regarding his troubles, and a galaxy of famous faces from all areas of life such as Ian Botham could well be easily persuaded if they were to be taken out for a day with the fishing tackle and yak about themselves for a few hours.

There is a model for such a show. Many years ago, the master of golf commentary presented a similarly themed show where he conversed to a well known golf fan in 'Around With Alliss' which provided gentle, amusing chat with a guest entirely relaxed since they were pursuing their hobby.

What a prospect the show might be! The chat-show needs restoring. Jonathan Ross's BBC1 show went on in unchanged form format for too long, the Graham Norton show that has taken over fromit is a bit samey so think about a programme that can appeal to people who are players in the most popular participation sport, the interviewees could appeal to those who are not necessarily interested in fishing but could be drawn to it as a result. There could be tips on fishing tackle for anglers at all levels, what you want to get started, different types of fishing and fishing tackle that might be needed for rivers as opposed to lakes or gravel pits as well as demonstrating how fishing helps the maintenance of the water environs.

The more I ponder it, the more I like the idea. It doesn't need to be primarily an fishing show, in fact considerably better if it isn't, but it could a runner and I shall write to the BBC at once!
