Being Aware Of Boating Safety Guidelines

By Adriana Noton

Boating is a wonderfully exciting recreational activity to get involved in, especially during the warmer lighter months, when being on the water, outside under the blazing sun, is pure paradise. However, this fun adventure can soon turn nasty of the proper precautions are put into place. While having fun might seem more important at the time, things can turn around in the blink of an eye. While most of the precautions are common sense, it helps to have them reiterated so that the importance of boating safety does not get lost.

Most of us familiar with the boating world know that have a life jacket is one of the first safety measures to put into place. Some of us may consider it a bit much when the day appears so inviting and without danger. This however is an illusion as many drowning accidents do occur even in good weather. You may feel capable should you fall overboard, but even an adult who can swim well can drown reasonably quickly.

Due to the fact that it is not required by law to wear life jackets, due to their uncomfortable and bulky nature, they are often found out of reach and below deck. Modern versions of life jackets are quite something as they are might lighter, more fashionable and very easy to wear.

Whilst road safety rules do not necessarily apply to boating safety, when it comes to being under the influence it is equally important. Although there is no law against drinking whilst sailing, many do not know when to stop and too many fatal accidents have been known to occur as a result.

Be able to communicate with those on land is a crucial safety measure never to be underestimated. Without others knowing where you are or being unable to communicate out can result in nasty consequences.

Before venturing out on the water by yourself, be sure to always inform someone of your plans. In case anything should happen or if the weather suddenly y takes a turn, that someone will know to keep a look out for you to make sure you return safely, and if not will be able to save precious time by looking for you in the right place.

Always make sure you have yourself equipped with an up to date marine radio in order to contact local marine rescue whenever you or others should need help whilst out boating. Mobile phone are not sufficient, even if you are not sailing far so do not be fooled. Coverage is fickle and phones are generally very vulnerable to water causing damage quite quickly.

Above and beyond these safety guidelines, always keep yourself updated with any relevant boating news and information. Keeping yourself up to speed through a boating course is always good practice. By keep abreast of current sailing news you will be able o keep yourself and others safe whilst still being able to enjoy the pure pleasure that boating has to offer
