A Very Lightweight Fishing Tackle for Heavy Weight Use

By Jenny Romu

One of the most modern and cutting edge aerial type center pin fishing tackles is the J.W. Young and Sons Bob James Lightweight Fishing Tackle. This center pin reel is designed with a spoked construction with two ball bearing racers where the spool runs. While this is not a pure center pin design, this innovation makes this rod one of the best ones in the world today.

This fishing tackle has a back plate that has been machine constructed to give the reel a lightweight feel. The center pin also has a click check system with a micro adjustable disc drag set-up. The center pin sits on the fishing rod without the standard cages usual with other fishing tackle designs. The diameter of the rod is 4" with a depth of 1" and weighs in at just 200 grams. These by itself allow the reel to be amongst the most efficient ones in terms of weight to power ratio in the market today.

Each of the fishing tackle reels has an exclusive serial number and certificate of authenticity. The body of the reel is built out of solid aluminum bar stock and the dual bearings system provides low maintenance and high efficiency. The handles can be separated and there is an on/off ratchet that is controlled using a radial lever system. Overall the reel is strong as it was anodized, simple, and allows great efficiency on the water.

This center pin also provides great control of the line during the pulling process because of its quick release spool mechanism. A hundred yards of 20lb line and 300 yards of 8lb monofilament line can be accommodated by this fishing tackle with great control and ease.

The story of this fishing tackle maker is quite a handful. The first owner, James William Young was born in 1870 in Redditch. He was literally born to the job with his father being a fishing reel maker. Upon learning the craft, he began innovating on the long established designs which led to the development of the Aerial reel. At the young age of 16, he was able to create the smallest full working model bicycle with over 400 individual hundred handmade parts. As he moved on in life, he became the supervisor for real production at Allcock's until he eventually set up his own shop. From there, two of his sons joined the family business to produce different models of fishing reels not only for their own company but for other fishing reel companies as well.

After a tragic accident, the elder statesman of the family passed away, leaving the business of creating top of the line reels and fishing tackles to the three sons. The Second World War forced the company to close shop but upon the war's end, one of the greatest innovations for a fishing tackle was made which was the Ambidex Reel. From there, the company has continued to reap more successes, making the best and most innovative designs for reels and tackles for the both professional and beginning anglers.
