Gone Fishing

By Shawn I. Liu

Fishing is valuable to people on many different levels. Some people find that fishing requires expertise and commitment. Others place more emphasis on the relaxation aspect of a fishing trip. There are even some people who look at it as a food source. Regardless of what fishing means to you, you can do it, and here's information on how to start.

Although many fishermen have hundreds of lures, only a few own a large number of reels. To help reels have a longer lifespan, store them carefully. That means reducing tension on the star wheel when your reel is not in use and also cleaning your line before reeling it in the final time.

Boots, vests and other accessories are as important as a good fishing rod. You can feel physically challenged when you fish, so make sure you plan accordingly by wearing layered clothing, waterproof footwear and insect repellent to maximize your comfort on your trip.

If you are fishing in deep seas, stay attuned to signs of nearby fish. Many times you will notice floating wood or debris. Very often, you will find some large game fish in that area. The presence of seagulls dining on small fish may provide a clue that more sizable fish are close by.

Look at the birds when you fish. If the birds are diving in a particular location, there is a good chance that there are fish located there. Birds dive to eat, and they enjoy eating fish more than anything else in the water. Watch their behaviors closely and it just might help you to have a great fishing day.

Find out your boat's maximum weight capacity before going out on the water. If you don't, you may end up tipping your boat over! Keep your load to a weight which is far from the capacity of the boat to ensure you stay safe on the water.

Practice is the most important tool a fly fisherman can use. Casting a rod while fly fishing takes a good amount of patience. Practicing is the only thing that will help you get better at it. Your casting technique will improve over time; eventually, you'll be able to cast accurately and hit your target every time.

Although it is not always easy, to reel in the best fish, you need to get up quite early. Most game fish are most active right before sunrise, so you should make sure you are out on the water by then. So if you have to travel to reach your fishing destination, make sure you leave early enough.

Prior to fishing a new area, get acclimated with the regulations of that particular body of water. There are some fishing areas with very specific guidelines regarding the amount of poles and hooks you may bring on your trip, as well as guidelines about which fish you may keep. Failure to know or understand these rules will probably not be enough to avoid a penalty or fine.

Pay close attention to how the colors of your bait compares to the colors of the water. You need to choose bait that will be visible to fish. Brightly-colored bait is ideal for murky water. However, in clear water, you should use colors that are deep and dark that do not blend into the surroundings.

Attach a bobber to your fillet knife to prevent loss. Don't be alarmed if you do lose it because it happens quite often. If you fish often, it will happen at some point. The idea here is to tie some type of small, lightweight floating device to your knife. In order to accomplish this, you'll need to string some rawhide lace into the handle's hole, then secure the lace with a rubber cork.

If you're using worms that are salted, you might need to revive its flavor after a few casts. This is doubly important when fishing in fast-moving or murky water. To "resalt" your worm all you have to do is rub it between your hands a couple times.

Try your hand at fly fishing. There are numerous reasons to try fly fishing; however, you should understand that it is much different from most other types of fishing. If interested, you must buy different lures, clothing, and rods to participate.

Smallmouth bass and walleye tend to be picky regarding the live bait that you use. Take a few leeches along as backup bait. Leeches will stay alive overnight if you keep them in a plastic or Styrofoam container with a little water.

If you fish at night it's a good idea to use lighted bobbers. With a lighted bobber, it is easier to see when a fish bites thanks to the the small on-board light bulb. When the bait is touched by a fish, you will see the bobber moving up and down.

Fishing could be a good way to relax and to have a great time. So enjoy being outdoors. Regardless of how long you have been involved with fishing, tips and tricks are always useful to receive. Try these ideas out on your next fishing trip.
