Awesome Cape Cod Canal Striped Bass Fishing Areas

By Bud Harrison

The Cape Cod Canal is amongst the East Coast's finest striper fishing locations. Montauk, NY may be the only fishing area on Earth eclipsing the Cape Cod Canal with regards to popularity and productivity amongst shore bound fishermen.

The Canal is one of only several areas along the striper coast where folks fishing from shore regularly land 20, 30, 40 and 50 plus pound striped bass.

There is an enormous learning curve in relation to consistently finding and catching big bass from the Canal. Learning the tides, techniques, and productive spots normally takes decades. Plenty of surfcasters find targeting stripers at the Canal very frustrating, and quit before ever developing a chance to succeed.

Occasionally it appears as though anybody who can toss a plug or jig more than 20 feet can catch a sizable bass from the Canal. In recent years these legendary bass blitzes have in most cases occurred throughout the spring. The bass fishing throughout these times is often fast and furious.

Yet for the majority of of the season, the sole fishermen reeling in large stripers with any amount of consistency will be fishermen focusing on the right spots at the best tide. Acquiring this knowledge often takes many seasons of learning from mistakes in order to acquire.

The majority of these hot spots feature some form of bottom structure. Huge rips, gulleys and rugged peaks litter the entire stretch of the Canal. A number of these spots feature dramatic depth changes. In some areas the bottom will drop 30 feet in a matter of just a few yards.

There is no shortage of productive spots along the Cape Cod Canal. I have a list of about 25 individual rips, holes and rocky peaks which I choose from when planning for a trip to the "Big Ditch". Even so I'd be telling lies if I claimed that all of these holes fishes equally well. Surely a number of these spots fish better than all of the other locations.

The key to catching large bass at the Canal lies in the angler's capacity to uncover the most productive fishing spots. The best places in the Canal usually feature massive rips, holes, and rocky peaks that stripers flock to like bees to honey. This particular guide shows you the precise locations of 10 of the best Cape Cod Canal fishing spots. Just as crucial, this guide clearly shows which tides fish best at each spot and why this is so.

Obtaining this information generally requires many years of experimentation in an effort to unravel the Canal code to discover the spots that fish well and which spots don't. Often times the difference between catching fish and not catching fish can be measured by only a few yards.

The booklet provides:

Accurate locations (to the yard) of the most productive fishing holes, rips and rocky peaks The exact yardage each rip, hole and rocky peak is from the Canal's shoreline Diagrams and photos showing where you should cast from Guidelines on how to point your cast in a spot which will sweep your bait directly through the strike zone Intel regarding the ideal tides for every spot and why specified tides outproduce others Comprehensive descriptions of the structure located in each spot
