The Self Importance Of People With No Imagination For The Future Is Stunning

By Justine Swallow

Terrible tidings has come to me from the waterside. It seems amazing, but despite, or possibly due to it, it being the proper close season for coarse fishing - as it has been at this time of year for in excess of 100 years now - there have been illegal matches held over the weekend.

This is sheer madness. There are good reasons why the close season was imposed, all to do with the health of the fish population, for the preservation of the water surroundings and the protection of the hobby for all involved. It is not just a matter of the ongoing supply of gear by the fishing tackle shop, far from it. In fact, the owners will likely be as concerned at this development as anybody else, as what these cretins are doing will result in more damage than the anti-fishing activists to the sport could do in a lifetime.

At this time of year, fish group in great numbers to spawn. They will prefer favoured places, which mean that anyone fishing in that spot is going to be in for a fantastic day. And if you have a competition with a bank full of rods then the haul is going to be fabulous, a diary moment. But the fish are going to be affected. For one thing, say a female, full of roe finds herself snagged and fighting capture. In all probability she is going to drop the eggs with little or no chance of them being fertilised, so that will result in tens of thousands of fry, from every female caught, not hatching and repopulating the rivers.

And then the fish are going to remember and they will start to avoid that place in coming years which means that no matter how excellent the bait and tackle supplied by fishing tackle shop can be, if there are no fish there to begin with, everyone will to be let down. There is precedent for this since the same thing occurred on the canals in some parts of the midlands. No one goes fishing there now as there isn't much point you see. There are scarcely any fish.

The scale of the utter arrogance that a handful of people decide that, they won't stop fishing for a few weeks and risk killing the waters for everybody else, putting who knows how many fishing tackle shop firms out of business and their people out of work, is stunning. I cannot begin to comprehend it and the law needs to be enforced and stop it before it is finished.
