Gold Coast Fishing Charters: Where Do They Go?

By Kim Raymond

If you have decided that you want to go on a Gold Coast fishing charter a natural question you may be asking is "where exactly do we go fishing?" Also "how far do we go out to sea?" Read on and I will answer these important questions.

A Gold Coast fishing charter could potentially take you to a host of different fishing locations. In fact a lot depends on the experience and knowledge of the captain taking you. So my first advice is to know a little about the captain of the boat that you are thinking of going out with.

The first target area of Gold Coast fishing charters, that is most highly frequented, is the area from Gold Coast Seaway out as far as 24 fathoms or about five nautical miles. This general area consists of rocky reefs surrounded by sand and gravel. These reefs comprise varieties of deep water weed and coral growth. Since these reefs attract large schools of bait fish species such as mackerel, pilchards, yellowtail scad (also known as yakkas), scavenger and predator fish species abound.

At around 10 nautical miles out to sea, at a depth of 36 fathoms, there are parallel ridge systems running north to south adjacent to the coastline. Beyond this at around 15 nautical miles out to sea, the same ridge systems occur at 50 fathom depths. Most half day Gold Coast fishing charters do not go beyond the 24 fathom mark.

It is worth noting that most Gold Coast fishing charters will take you out to the 24 fathom depths where reefs have already been heavily fished. If possible to catch more and bigger fish, target a charter company that will take you to the 36 and 50 fathom marks respectively.

Going out to the 50 fathom reefs and beyond, is the best location to catch large migratory fish species as they travel south with the warm deep blue water currents during the summer months. For fishing enthusiasts who want to target the larger fish species, I suggest you ask Gold Coast fishing charter operators of this particular option.

To conclude, if you are not a real go getter and you want a sedate and comfortable time on the sea, I suggest that you fish the protected waters of the seaway and estuaries. Here sandy and mud flats attract certain species of fish.
