Key West tarpon fishing is one of the many popular activities for hobbyists and enthusiasts. These individuals enjoy the challenge as these fishes put up a good fight before they can be caught. If you want to give it a try, then it is best that you make some preparations before your trip.

Check what locations are best known for these fishes. In some places, you will catch different types of fishes while other spots may be filled solely with tarpon. Determine where the best spots are as you may need to arrange a trip to a distant location. Note what routes are best taken for your expedition.

There are also certain times of the day and of the year when this fish can be easily found. At certain months they are known to converge in large numbers in specific locations. They may also be easily caught at certain times of the day. Strong winds and low visibility will certainly hamper your ability to catch them.

The fish can take the bait and yet once you start reeling, you can still lose it. Once you have cast your line, you need to know when you should be pulling your line. Remember to wait for the feel of its weight and make sure that it is positioned away from your direction before you start pulling.

This fish is known for its liveliness and will give any one a good fight. Know when to loosen the line and when to pull it taut so that it will not snap during the struggle. It is recommended that you do not take a break from pulling and that you change directions every so often so you can successfully reel your catch in.

You will have to decide on what you will be using as bait. There are synthetic ones but you can also use live baits for a change. Some of these lures will be more appropriate in certain conditions so make sure to check what is best for your trip. Practice how to handle this lures so you can increase your chances of catching a fish.

You will not be able to fish if you do not have a complete set of equipment. You will need tackles, weights, rods, and more. Each of this equipment have varying specifications which can certainly be overwhelming for any beginner. Research beforehand on what types of equipment will be appropriate for this activity.

There are many stores that offer a good selection of this equipment. Aside from making a purchase, try and ask the personnel for tips on the sport, as they may be more knowledgeable than you think. They may recommend some items or give you tips on how to catch this elusive fish. Consider hiring a guide if you are a beginner as these experts know where the best spots are.

Many like to take pictures with their catch as evidence of their success in Key West tarpon fishing. This can be especially tricky since it will fight to get back to the water. Remember to put your safety first. After the picture is taken, it should be revived first so that it can avoid the sharks which are known to prey on them.
