Evaluating The Different Types Of Japanese Koi For Sale

By Tamera Keith

Most people will agree to the fact that Japanese Koi are extremely popular of late. Of course, those who have just learned of them will believe that they are popular just recently, while others who know understand that the love for this fish goes on for many decades. Moreover, these are ornamental carp, and their use is primarily to decorate ponds with interesting color. Therefore, finding the best Japanese Koi for sale is important because people should understand that there are several varieties. Each variety has its own colors and patterns, among other distinct features.

The word itself means carp in Japanese and most look for what is known as the Brocaded Carp, called nishikigoi in Japan. People love them for many reasons, and one of those is that they are symbols of friendship and love in their native country. Their interest worldwide began in 1914 after an exhibition in Tokyo.

Their worldwide popularity has made them readily available in virtually all pet shops. But, people have to understand that they are not all created equal. These are all bred, and each breed is valued differently. Also, higher quality fish are not available in common pet shops, and only available through special dealers. Nonetheless, most varieties are extremely colorful and have endless color combinations.

There are tons of extremely popular varieties in the Western world. However, some people may believe them to look like a goldfish. However, there are huge differences among goldfish and Japanese Koi. One is their barbels on the lips, which are not found on goldfish. Also, goldfish are smaller.

One thing that makes these fish very attractive to collectors and owners is that they are quite durable. Given their ideal conditions, they fare very well. They are also very easy to feed, as they do enjoy peas, lettuce, and other vegetables. However, it is also important to note that they are very limited in appetite during winter time. If temperatures reach below a certain amount, they eat very little.

However, as soon as springtime returns and the water begins to heat up again, they start to eat normally. During winter when it's cold, they will simply eat little bits of algae found on the bottom of the water feature. However, if they are given their requirements for a healthy life, they can live very long, making them an excellent investment.

But, it is always smart to purchase from dealers who have good quality fish. In doing so, it increases the chances of them living longer, and in some cases, consumers may even receive a good guarantee. Whatever the case, it is important to be familiar with the subject, given the fact that there are so many different varieties. The common ones are very inexpensive, where others can be quite costly. The more one knows, the better a price he or she will pay.

Japanese koi for sale is widely available today in pet shops. But, doing your homework will prove very beneficial to getting exactly the value for what is paid for. After researching and comparing prices, consider where these attractive and colorful fish would look best on display. This pond could look amazing in the backyard, but just as beautiful and welcoming in the front yard for all to see and enjoy. A water feature without the attractive colors is lacking something that could all be made up with an addition of gorgeous fish that make a strong statement.
