Fly Fishing

By Andy Craven

Fly Fishing has been around for ages. Even in medieval times people fished for their food. The sport evolved over the years to become one that requires great skills. Ask any fly fisherman and he will tell you just how addictive it can become.

There is a huge difference between fly fishing and other forms of fishing. In other fishing styles you use lures or even live bait to catch the fish but when fly fishing you use a fly that looks just like a real insect, the very insect they usually feed on. You mimic the natural movement of the fly using a much longer line. This allows you to imitate the natural movement of the fly as it travels across the surface of the water. The aim is to fool the fish in to believing it is a real fly.

The cast is also very different. Fly fishing uses a constant cast, which you then pull back numerous time imitating a real fly on the water. If you are fishing for carp you cast and allow the bait to rest then waiting for the fish to take your bait.

Both methods can reap large rewards but fly fishing forces you to think as fish thinks and this can be very rewarding as it is man versus nature!

As I mentioned previously other forms of fishing use man made materials but your seasoned fly fisherman would never do that. He favours naturally made flies and will tell you that the fish believes it is real.

Visiting your local river or pond is all well and good but if you want a real days fishing travel to where trout and bass live and try fly fishing. I know you will love it.

Alaska and Canada are wonderful fly fishing vacation spots. South American, Mexico and even Russia are fantastic locations and that beats visiting your local fishery any day of the week. Don't you agree?

As Chess is often said to be "The King of Sports" it is also often said that fly fishing could make the same boast. Try it, you'll fall in love, hook, line and fly! Corny, I know! I'm an angler not a comedian!
