The Top 5 Fly Fishing Destinations in the world

By Nick Martin

Patagonia

On the southern tip of the South American continent Patagonia is home to a couple of the remarkable fly fishing in the world. There are several great options for the adventurous angler but if you would like giant sea-run Brown Trout travel to the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego and the Rio Grande river. You can take expensive tackle or just your passport, cheap fishing rods and something to eat.

Kamchatka

Offered as being "Alaska 100 years back" Kamchatka offers a wasteland like no other. If you're attempting to find the ultimate Rainbow Trout destination in a true immaculate frontier head to Russia's hidden gem. Kamchatka can be on the dear side, transportation to the brooks often involves a helicopter ride, but catching a 30+-inch fat Rainbow is really worth the expense. One word of advice, Kamchatka has the highest density of Grizzly bears in the world, so keep a sharp eye.

New Zealand

It's common knowledge that New Zealand has some of the best trout fishing in the world, drawing a massive migration of American anglers in our winter months. Fortunately the majority focus on one or two select areas like the lake Taupo area. To get away from the crowds and into some impressive landscape, head to Fiordland State Park on the South Island.

Belize

Home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, Belize's Caribbean shore is a tropical nirvana. With 450 cayes (islands) lining the shore, Belize is the ideal location for sea kayaking and fly fishing. Turneffe Atoll gets almost all of the attention for fly fishing thanks to the lodges operating there but for the angler with a bold spirit, you must fly into Placencia, hire a canoe and hit some of the finest Permit and Bonefish territory in the Caribbean.

British Columbia, Canada

Five hours north of Vancouver the journey takes you to the southern end of Desolation Sound, a marine park stuffed with hidden bays and lagoons. The bulk of the park must be traveled to by ship or canoe, limiting the fishing pressure considerably. The bays and lagoons have Salmon, Doly Varden, Rockfish, and Lingcod.
