Gold Coast Fishing Charters: Four Big Questions Answered

By Kim Raymond

So are your ready to get out on a Gold Coast fishing charter ? If so, you probably have lots of questions. Check this to get answers to four often asked questions to help you decide whether to take up the challenge and if so, to help you navigate your way through deciding which charter boat company to go with.

Firstly. "Do we the customers get to keep the fish we catch when we go out on a Gold Coast fishing charter?" Each charter boat company has its own policy. Some stipulate that the total fish caught are equally shared by all the boat's customers whilst others have a policy that says "you keep what you catch".

Depending on the boat and its fishing strategy, a boat may decide to troll for the larger pelagic fish. Since only 2-3 lines are used in this operation, it is often decided that all the fish caught by trolling is equally shared by all the paying customers irrespective of who actually pulled in the fish.

"When going out on a Gold Coast fishing charter, are we able to keep our own catch?" The fish caught by crew members are generally shared with the paying customers. Just one word of caution. It is illegal for the crew of a boat doing a commercial Gold Coast fishing charter, to sell their catch.

Question number two. "How many people does a Gold Coast fishing charter boat take out?" There is a legal limit as to how many people a commercial charter boat can take out. However bear in mind that this is often more than the comfortable number for fishing.

The truth be told, unfortunately, some Gold Coast fishing charter companies put profit before people. By stacking a boat with the maximum legal number of people, they purposely restrict fishing options. This includes spending less time and money by frequenting reefs that are closer to shore and therefore are more heavily fished.

Some Gold Coast fishing charter companies take less than the legal numbers of people so as to increase fishing options and to provide a more comfortable and satisfying experience. So it pays for the customer to not just choose the cheapest price but ask exactly what you are getting. Paying a cheaper price might mean fishing 'having no elbow room' and facing the prospects of often get lines tangled.

When inquiring about a Gold Coast fishing charter, don't forget to ask about the size and configuration of the boat before asking about numbers.

Question number three. "When do the Gold Coast fishing charter boats go out and come back? Most Gold Coast fishing charters go out at 6AM and return before midday, which constitutes a half day charter. Another option is to do a half day by leaving at midday and returning late in the afternoon. A full day charter means leaving early morning and returning mid afternoon.

Fourth. "Can we bring alcohol on a Gold Coast fishing charter?" The answer is "yes" but with restrictions since alcohol consumption if not regulated, will compromise safety of passengers and crew.
