Have An Unforgettable Experience With Ketchikan Fishing Charters

By Krystal Branch

Alaska is not quite the snow-covered wasteland that many people think it is. In summer, it is one of the most beautiful states in the USA, with mountains, forests and a variety of water bodies that form a haven for anyone who loves the great outdoors. You can go hunting, hiking or camping but for a really unforgettable experience, consider Ketchikan fishing charters.

Ketchikan lies at the foot of stunning Deer Mountain on an island named Revillagigedo. Only a narrow strait separates it from nearby Gravina Island. The city is nearly 240 miles to the south of Juneau, making it the most southerly of Alaska's cities.

The city has a maritime climate very similar to that experienced in Scotland. In winter, even though it may snow, it's not nearly as cold as one would expect an Alaskan town to be. In fact, winters are often really rainy rather than freezing. Summers tend to be on the mild side, making them perfect for being active in the great outdoors.

Ketchikan is a popular port for cruise ships and also has an important timber industry. However, it's as the salmon capital of the world that the city draws visitors from all over. The waters here are home to various species of salmon, including king salmon, red salmon, pink salmon and chum salmon.

Salmon isn't the only type of fish that roams in the area's waters. Halibut, snapper and cod abound too and there are several crab and shrimp species as well. If you don't want to go fishing in the sea, take your rod and tackle and head inland. The lakes and streams are home to trout as well as species like steelhead and grayling. Some charter companies offer trips that include a spot of hiking, which is also a great opportunity for viewing the Alaskan wildlife.

Fresh fish is heavenly when it's seared only lightly on a hot grill and then served with a buttery, lemony sauce. Otherwise, roast it with some onions or poach it. For something different, try ceviche, where you don't cook the fish at all, at least not with the application of heat. The addition of lots of lemon juice will cause a chemical reaction that will cook the fish for you. If you have more fish than you can eat in one sitting, turn it into cakes that you can freeze.

If you haven't had much luck in the fishing waters, don't despair. There are plenty of places in Ketchikan where you can order the freshest seafood. The city also has much more to offer than just fish. Take the kids to the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show or marvel at the local totem poles. Soar through the tree canopy on a zip-line or stroll along picturesque Creek Street with its wooden buildings on stilts.

A great accommodation option is to stay at a lodge in the area. Many lodges can even arrange boat or hiking trips for you. You'll also find several companies that offer Ketchikan fishing charters. Bear in mind though that summer is high season in Alaska, so it might be best to pre-book online.
