Enjoy Sun And Sea With Key West Fishing Charters

By Jerri Perry

The perfect holiday destination is one with great weather, stunning beaches, a good nightlife and plenty of things to do. It's even better when you don't have to travel halfway around the world to get there but can simply drive down. The Florida Keys is one of those destinations and Key West fishing charters will ensure that you have the action-packed holiday of a lifetime.

Key West is the main city on the eponymous island which is probably the most famous of the Florida Keys. Notable people from playwrights like Tennessee Williams to US presidents like Harry S Truman have been making this island their destination of choice to get away from the winter cold. The one person who will probably always be associated with the island is author Ernest Hemingway who, while staying here, became a fishing enthusiast.

Hemingway particularly loved deep-sea fishing and there are several charter tours that specialize in this activity. It's in those deep waters outside of the barrier reef off the keys that you'll find big game fish. Get tuna or mahi-mahi for the pot or catch a marlin or a sailfish for a trophy.

If big game fish seems too advanced for you, try light tackle first. This is suitable for groupon, sharks and snapper. The Keys are famous for tarpon as well, which you'll find in spring. These species live in the shallower waters around the reefs, so bring some snorkeling gear too. There are plenty of colorful marine life and fascinating shipwrecks to explore.

The very shallow waters of the backcountry around the Keys are for what is known as flats fishing. You use a special boat known as a flats skiff to go try catch species like barracuda. The Key West Grand Slam involves catching a tarpon, a bonefish and a permit all on the same day.

Some people don't like the solitude of a fishing trip or chartering a boat may simply be too expensive for them. If you fall into this category, going out on a party boat may be the option for you. With one of these, you share the boat with a large group, which makes it a great way to meet new people and to take along the kids or friends who don't really like catching fish. This is probably not for you if you're a serious angler, though.

Key West sees glorious weather for most of the year. Between May and around October it's rainy season but even then it it usually rains only in the mornings. Since fewer people visit during this time of year, the city and the island attractions will be less crowded too. Just be aware that this is hurricane season too.

Key West fishing charters are easy to find and book online. In the city itself you'll also find plenty of charter companies. If it's a beautiful day and you wonder what to do, head to one of these for the adventure of a lifetime and you may even have dinner sorted.
