The Captain's Role In Key West Fishing Charters

By Leigh Bean

If you have spent years being an avid fisherman, you have undoubtedly dreamt of going to sea and reeling in the biggest one ever. If you should find yourself in Florida, Key West fishing charters can make your dream a reality. Record breaking catches have been taken from the ocean surrounding this coastal state.

Adrenalin will begin coursing through your body the moment you realize you have snagged that long awaited for fish. Tuna, swordfish, flounder, and marlin are just a few of the many species that call these waters home. Ranging in weight up to one hundred and fifty pounds and more, you will have the battle of your life going on trying to land one of these beauties.

There are two different kinds of boats that can be used when hoping to locate the big ones. The first is the head boat. It is often favored because the price is quite affordable. So much so, that these boats do not leave harbor with any less than twenty anglers on board. If it is your desire to find that big one, you will have to do so after untangling your line from the many others in the water. Live bait, that is proven to be the best of lures, are not allowed on head boats.

When you make the choice to charter there are some things that you should take into consideration. The first one is the ships captain. Know what you want to do and choose a captain that is comfortable with filling your request. Anyone with a background in commercial fishing will have the advantage over most others.

How much you are willing to spend will decide a number of factors. You may have an air conditioned cabin when the heat is just too much to withstand. You will also have the choice of picking a weekday rather than a weekend to set sail. You needn't worry about a guarantee that you will catch a fish because most of these captains know exactly where to troll giving you the greatest odds of making a catch.

Pay little attention to the numerous ads you will find detailing everything these boats and their owners have to offer. Looks are often deceiving and you may not get what you see plastered all over a pamphlet. Do a little leg work on your own and ask around the marina's which fishing excursions are the ones best known for supplying what a person wants.

Also find out what effect the weather will have on your excursion. Will you get your money refunded or will the trip be rescheduled if a storm is brewing. Before you sign on the dotted line find out about these things. A good sea captain will never take anyone out when stormy weather has been predicted. The high sea is no place to be during a storm.

Don't continue to let the big ones get away. Show your friends just how great the catch was by being photographed with it or having the fish mounted. Plan on getting some rest because the majority of charters will find you a big fish to land. A definite feat for even the strongest of men, Key West fishing charters are the ultimate anglers experience.
