Key West Tarpon Fishing Anglers

By Natasha Moore

Key West tarpon fishing is an activity that has benefited many fish eaters and the fishers. This brownish or silver fish has large body that is covered with huge scales. Its lungs help in inhaling oxygen found on water surfaces. It has a large heavy bone that points upward and the mouth is large. Key West, located south of an Island in Florida has been a place many go for trips to look at fish.

The fish has three sources of food; small bait fish, shrimps and crabs. It migrates annually in the months of March and June and move to the Oceanside flats of the Florida Island. At this time, fishers move to Florida to fish large amounts of this fish. They employ different fishing methods depending on the one they prefer. Light tackle is one of them and uses the food to attract them on the surface water.

Night fishing is the other method done in the evening, almost sunset. Here, one uses spin casting attires at dusk and rolls a plug near deep channel. This method is good when all conditions are accurate. Additionally, one can get more of them using this method since it is done at night. This is when they are active due to low light intensity as they are nocturnal.

The hooks used should be well fixed since the fish can unfasten with the mouth. The mouth has tough texture and consistency like that of a cinder block. Use of fly rods is also a method used by anglers. This method works well in the morning when tarpon moves in deep water. Though an easy way of harvesting this fish, one should use the best pattern and color that easily draw it near the water surface.

In the morning, the fish travels in deep waters and it is hard to hook them on the fly. The fish do not go far to look for food, therefore, one should choose a color that will be seen by the fish. This method is popular and preferred by most fish anglers. There are no specific times to fish since they are found all the year in waters except during migration times. One can fish them at any time especially on the boat side.

The preferable time to fish during the day are afternoons and mornings. This is when there is change in tides as a result of the moon. Since this fish is a tidal feeder, it feeds during these times of the day and this is when one can harvest them with ease. They are mostly in motion while looking for food and one can trap them easily.

Loads of tarpon migrate during certain time of the year and this determines the best months that one can do successful fishing. The annual migration of this fish starts in March and takes up to July. Therefore, April, May and June are the best months for harvesting large number of tarpon. However, one may not get large catches because many anglers do the fishing at this time.

In brief, Key West tarpon fishing is a great opportunity for anglers. When it comes to angling activity, tarpon is the best fish and Key West being the best place. The fish is big and amazing to feed a whole family. Full day chartered fishers can possibly get enough catch for both sale and dinner.
