Try to use live bait when fishing and you will have better results. Live bait tends to be more expensive because it works. So pass by the frozen shrimp and squid if you are going off shore, and purchase live bait fish for better results. If fishing in fresh water, use live crickets or worms for excellent results.

Use the right type of bait. Just like human beings, fish are finicky. Not every fish like the same type of meal. So before you begin, learn the types of baits that you will need to catch the fish you are targeting for the day. Do the same for lures, too.

Night-time fishing for species like small-mouthed bass can be very productive. If you were successful at catching fish in a shallow area during daylight, then stick to that same general area at night. Bass are known to stay put and not roam too far from home. Just push out a bit into water that is a little deeper, and look for areas with weed beds or rock piles where the fish might settle in for the night.

Do your research, not just about fishing in general, but about the specific types of fish you are going after. This is called respecting your prey. Fish are not stupid, and they have preferences as to what they like to eat, as well as, certain habits and features that you should know.

If you are going fishing alone, make sure that you tell your family or friends where you are planning to catch some fish. Accidents happen and it is always better to be prepared than be sorry at the end.
