How To Get The Most Out Of Santee Cooper Fishing

Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie are two large bodies of water in South Carolina. They are connected by a canal and the area is known as Santee Copper. The area holds approximately 180,000 acres of water and about 450 miles of beautiful shoreline. Water depths range anywhere from extremely shallow to depths of about 75 feet. The lakes hold a variety of fish species and is why Santee Cooper fishing in world renown.

Most fisherman love to fish in this area. It offers some of the best fishing around. There are plenty of charter boats available to go after the big ones along with expert guides to help get a feel for the lake. Use a map that marks off shallow spots and structure if attempting to fish on your own.

The two lakes have a lot of bottom structure consisting of leftover tree stumps and cypress trees that are still growing. Fish love to hang out around these types of structures and the big ones will be laying in wait. Another plus to the area is that the water does not freeze and there are no restrictions on when fish can be caught.

Several world record fish have been caught within the lakes. Some of the more popular species to fish for are large mouth bass, crappie, bream, catfish, striped bass and white bass. Seasonal tactics should be used in order to produce the most fish. In the spring fish tend to hang out in shallower depths while in the summer they hide in deeper cooler waters of the lake and are somewhat harder to find.

Sixty five to seventy degrees water temperature seems to be the best time to fish for the huge large mouth bass that can be caught. In the spring the bass are spawning in shallow depths. The big female bass protect their eggs and tend to hang around the area along with the males. Either one can be found on the end of your line when fishing this time of year.

Because of the large sized and many varieties of fish, santee cooper fishing may give you one great day of fishing day. Year around you can find plenty of exciting action. Simply remember to do some research so your day will be as productive as possible.
