Historical Truck Window Decals For G.M.C. & Chevy Trucks

By Laurence U. Storey

The history of GMC trucks date back from the time when General Motors acquired the independent auto makers in the early 1900's. Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was purchased by GM in 1909 which is company is known for its production of commercial trucks that are powered by an engine with just one cylinder. Upon the purchase of Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, GMC truck trade name was created. In that same period of time, another independent automaker was obtained by GMC, the Reliance Motor Company. The two new acquisitions were tied in 1911 and led to the construction of the earliest GMC trucks. The Motor Show in New York in 1912 gave the public the first glance to the GMC trucks.

General Motors Corporation which is usually shortened as GMC is the other name for the company in the early times. This can lead to confusion with the name of the trucks they are producing then though. Because of that, the company name was altered to General Motors. GMC was left as the trade name of the trucks and other large vehicles being produced by the company. Yellow Coach is a Chicago-based Company that specializes in the manufacture of bus. In 1925, GM paid for a large portion of the company's share of stock and became the major stake holder. After more than a decade, GM totally bought the company and turned it into the Coach Division of GM. The period of World War II has helped in the success of GMC trucks. This is so since the US government has contacted the company to construct large vehicles that will be used by the military force in the war. More than 600,000 huge vehicles were fabricated by the company during this time. The large vehicles-production of GMC is still continuing today. The large vehicles they offer in the auto market of Middle East and North America include military tanks, SUV's, trucks and Lorries.

The progress in GMC trucks and buses persist until the late 80's. Center in Canada was constructed just to meet the increasing demand on buses and large vehicles then. However in 1987, GM was required to put on sale the bus and coach rights to Transportation Manufacturing Corporation Company and Canadian Coaches Corporation because of the progressing rigid competition in the market at that time. As of today, GMC is a maker of large vehicles like SUV's and pick-up trucks. There was a time though when the company also offered other large vehicles that include military tanks and trucks, fire trucks, ambulance, coaches and mobile homes.

GMC and Chevrolet are the divisions of General Motors that are creating autos with more or less the same in exterior. The minor differences between the models of these two brand names are the grill style and the nameplates. The headlight of GMC autos make use of quad lights starting from their autos in 1962 through 1972 models while Chevrolet used dual lights only. In terms of marketing though, GMC has some advantage because it is offered by Pontiac and Cadillac dealer as well. Chevrolet on the other hand is solely sold by Chevrolet dealers. The similar appearance of Chevrolet and GMC autos continued up until 2007 only because during this year GMC started to offer Sierra and Silverado which are models that are totally different from Chevy models.

Chevrolet holds the upper hand in the US auto market having greater sales when matched with the GMC autos. In Canada, GMC takes the lead because its models are far more popular than the Chevrolet models. Although these two brand names may have their own market, the results will not change. Either GMC or Chevy lead the sales in the market, General Motors will still benefit. This only goes to say that this company is really making it big in the auto market. All around the globe GM is popular for its dependable huge autos. V:21
