Fly Fishing Tackle Review: The JW Young Bob James Lightweight Centrepin Reel

By Tommy Lee

If you think like I do, you completely enjoy every single fishing outing. There isn't a thing that pleases me more than casting out across a chilly, swift watercourse and learning what is hiding deep down in the waters! Being that I'm not available to travel around like I wish I could, I endeavour to do all I can during the time I do have. Consequently, I'd love for my fly fishing tackle to be the most premium, most inexpensive that I can pay for. I've just bought a superb reel created by leading manufacturer JW Young. Continue on to see a short evaluation of the lightweight 4" centrepin reel from Bob James.

Fly Fishing Tackle: Chief Elements of the JW Young Bob James Lightweight Centrepin Reel

The reel features an RRP of around £299, however, you could come up with it on special sale for no more than £250 (VAT included @ 20%). Even though it may cost a lot, It doesn't bother me to purchase a reel such as this which is guaranteed by the JW Young company. This corporation has been a front runner in the industry when it comes to making excellent quality centrepin reels - manufactured right here in the UK, by utilising the finest grade materials and nothing else. The efficient designers and makers at JW Young have done an excellent job constructing this Bob James model. With the exception of some sizeable augmentations, this reel was inspired by the standard Bob James centrepin. The back plate was machine made to cut down the weight with no forfeiting of serviceability. This reel contains every component that you should see in one of this quality, which includes the one-of-a-kind cutaway cage construction, 2 ball bearings, click check, mirco-adjustable drag. In my opinion, it is just right for hunting trout being that is contains a great mixture of size and weight.

With double bearings to ensure smooth operation and superior performance, this is very nearly a perfect piece of fly fishing tackle. The handles are removable, and the on-off ratchet operates by way of a lever that's been radially positioned. The reel's understated grey anodised finish is quite attractive and durable.

This ultimate centrepin model comes with a quick-release spool. It features a machined back plate that's, as a minimum, 25% lighter in weight than its forerunner - an all around 10% less amount of weight. I'm almost sure that it is likely among the lightest weight, and possibly, the lightest weight centrepin reel offered. Yet another aspect that I prefer is the ventilated rod plate which is created out of bar stock aluminium. The reel can support 100yd of 20lb backing plus 300yd of 8lb monofilament line.
