Find The Best Tarpon Guides

By Patrice McCoy

The best Key West tarpon guides are highly experienced sea captains able and willing to help you catch this great fish. They will show you where to find it, but they'll also provide all the necessary equipment for catching the silver monster. Only high quality equipment is good enough for it, especially quality rods and reels, and they can give you valuable advices about buying your own gear, as well.

This large, impressive fish lives in the Atlantic, but it likes Gulf of Mexico as well. The best area for fishing is the west side of Key West, on the edge of blue waters, but also Florida Keys. Find yourself a great guide and you will greatly improve your chances for catching the great silver monster.

This prehistoric, huge fish really is the ultimate catch. They eat smaller bait fish, shrimp or crabs, and can be quite impressive. Their large mouths with strange structure pointing upwards can look terrifying, and their high jumps and long, exhausting runs are especially attractive. You will have to put all your strengths in this fight, and you will love this.

The season begins in March, but May is the peak of tarpon season, especially for night fishing. June and July are also very good for them. Baby tarpon is more interesting in August and September, but the season can be prolonged to October, very successfully.

Choose the high quality flies only, for the best results. Great products are available online. For example, you may choose blue or purple crab, back country brown or orange-brown, ghost, mangrove bait fish, mutton snapper, pilchard or maybe pin fish in different sizes. For baby tarpon you can also use bay anchovy or shiner.

Rates will depend on the time you are planning to spend fishing. You can reserve the whole day, three quarters or even half day flats fishing. The whole day reservation will cover approximately eight hours on the sea, three quarters will be around six, and half day around four hours. You could also make a reservation for night fishing.

You will have to leave the deposit for each reservation, and you need to discuss the details with your selected captain. The deposit is usually about forty percent of the price. If you need to cancel your reservation, do it at least 30 days before, to be able to receive a full refund. Sometimes you will be able to re-schedule the date, but you have to talk to your captain about it.

Sometimes the captain himself needs to cancel your charter, if the wind is too strong. Heavy rain and other more serious weather conditions can be the cause for it as well. In this case you can also re-schedule your charter. Other ways you'll receive a full refund.

The whole arrangement involves the use of tackle, your fishing license for the day, all the flies and other equipment you might need. You can store your foods and drinks in their cooler. All specific details have to be discussed with your captain. Choose one of the best Key West tarpon guides and enjoy.
