Key Methods to Make Your Trout Fishing More Rewarding

By Mitch Hill

Trout fishing is an activity that's very easy to try your hand at, as trout can be found in so many areas. Just make sure you do your homework ahead of time and get to know their habits. Trout are canny and sometimes catching them can be touch-and-go. How successful you will be depends on a lot of variables. What tackle are you using? What weight of fishing line? How well do you cast? These elements as well as when you go fishing all contribute to your success or failure. And so, why don't we look at some methods that aren't difficult that can help improve the size of your catch.

One key to help you catch more trout is to remember to use light line. Four pound test is sufficient for most occasions. In any event, don't exceed six pound test. Using heavier line just makes it easier for the fish to see the line and avoid it. This is an error novices to trout fishing often make. They don't realize that using a heavier line will stop the fish from biting. In most waterways where you find trout a good color of mono-filament line to use is light blue. This color isn't easy for the trout to detect. It's a good idea when you go fishing for trout to have only light tackle. A light, 5 foot rod is good for most situations. Another tip is to make sure your lures are small. It's a good idea to keep your hook size at no more than a Size 10.

Figure out what time of day the trout are out and about and you will have more trout to choose from. If you pay attention to when the insects that the trout feed on are buzzing about, you will have a good idea of when the fish will also be active. Early in the evening, when the day starts to cool off, is when the insects start stirring. This can vary based on the climate and time of year, of course. Look for trout to feed while the weather is still cool in the early morning if the daytime temperatures have been extremely hot. The weather patterns can help you determine which bait stands the best chance of meeting with success when you go fishing. When it's been rainy, you will find many earthworms have been swept into the water. When this is the case, earthworms make great bait. When it's windy, what critters do you think the fish feed on? Crickets and grasshoppers get blown onto the water and attract the trout. If you want to play it safe with your bait choice, use the same type of food that the trout are feeding on naturally.

One important thing you should be prepared for is to wear the proper clothing before you go fishing. Fishing all day in cold streams requires that you wear waders so that you can get around in comfort. The footwear that you have must be waterproof and insulated or you may find yourself too uncomfortable to fish. If you plan on staying in shallow water, you can just use waterproof boots. Fishing vests are also very useful, as these give you a place to store your extra lures, hooks and other gear. Your trip should also include a variety of sun protection items including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. It is important to have insect repellent to keep the bugs away. Trout usually live where insects are prolific, which means you need to bring insect repellent at all costs.

If you're up for an exciting fishing trip, plan an ice fishing expedition. This is often done on lakes, and lake trout can be very large, making this kind of fishing appealing for many sportsmen. After you drill the hole, or holes, in the ice, you send down live bait to a deep depth. Make sure the ice is thick enough to support your weight. You don't want it to crack and dump you in the cold water. This is a danger you have to watch out for. One of the hazards of ice fishing is the danger of frostbite. That's why waterproofed and warm clothing is mandatory. Ice fishing is an activity that requires the right equipment and preparation, and if you're not experienced at it, you should first do it with someone who knows what they're doing. Trout fishing is a great tradition that has been enjoyed by generations of men and women. Just about every section of North America has trout fishing spots, so it's very convenient to enjoy this pastime. Have you always dreamed of catching a trophy marlin to hang on your wall over the fireplace? Well, someday maybe you will. But for now, just take a walk to your local stream and enjoy a pan-fried batch of trout for your dinner. If you adopt these suggestions and guidelines into your trout fishing procedures, your results should improve as well as your enjoyment of the sport.
