The Best Area For Bonefishing Key West Florida

By Michelle Howe

A lot of sport fishermen are spending their vacations bonefishing Key West providing the ideal surroundings for it. The shallow waters of the Keys provide an ideal environment for these fish. With their darker backs they are not always easy to see, as a consequence they are often called the ghost of the flats, or the grey ghost.

They do like the warmer waters, and if it gets too cold will move off of the flats and into warmer waters. This is why it makes sense to get in touch with a local guide. They know the waters and the conditions, and they certainly know their fish.

A lot of fishermen have heard tales of flats fishing, but have yet to try it themselves. Imagine it, just the local guide and two of you on a very small skiff. Once you have reached the flats the engine is shut off and secured. The guide climbs onto the platform and starts to slowly pole over the flats.

As he is higher than you he gets to see the bonefish first. He will then tell you in what direction they are, using the clock face method. With 12 o'clock dead ahead, 2 o'clock to your right and 10 o'clock to your left. He will give you the distance in boat lengths. It is then up to you to cast in the direction and at the distance given.

If you get a strike, you will know all about it. These fish are designed for speed. They are also a very wily fish so it will really make it interesting for you as you pit your wits against a fish, but this is one of the main attractions of the sport.

There are some prize specimens out there just waiting to be hooked. It is entirely up to you as to whether you try fishing with light tackle or if you try your hand at fly fishing. A word of advice, set up your rod the night before. This is because space is tight on a skiff, and if you have to rig on the day, this will eat into your fishing time.

Fly fishing on the flats is like nothing you have ever tried before. The results can make it all worthwhile though. Most guides have their own equipment and it is ideal to ask him about tips and pointers over any recommended equipment, you would be wise to listen to what he has to say.

Experience for yourself just why there are so many fishing contests down there. Light tackle fishing with live bait is both fun and exciting. These fish really love either shrimp or crab. So just follow your guides instructions and drop that tasty bait in front of one, and prepare to do battle.

So for any fisherman who wants to experience that something a little different, bonefishing Key West is for you. The fish are often above 4 lbs, so bigger than those of the Bahamas, and more difficult to catch. Discover for yourself why so many return to fish there year after year.
