Trying your hand at fishing in Fuerteventura

By Irving Hardman

Fuerteventura is one of the largest of the Canary Islands and is only smaller than Tenerife. As Fuerteventura isn't far from the coast of Africa it is also hot for almost the entire year and even through winter temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees. What makes the island so popular with tourists isn't just the warm climate though as it also has plenty of different activities for people to try and different things for people to see.

Fuerteventura is very popular with people who enjoy fishing because it has different types of fishing as well as many types of fish. The island also makes a fantastic location for fishing as there are numerous places to do it. There is nothing better for someone who enjoys fishing than sitting beside the water in the wonderful sunshine with a cold drink and just waiting for a fish to bite.

The most popular type of fishing for people to try in Fuerteventura is big game fishing or deep sea fishing. All of the tour operators are catch and release and the area off the coast of Fuerteventura is the perfect environment for large fish like marlin and swordfish mainly because of the warm temperature. People can spend days doing deep sea fishing off the island's coast especially after they have first received the instruction and guidance which the operators provide.

When fishing in Fuerteventura the variation in the type of fish people catch is amazing. Closer to the coast fish are obviously smaller but ten pound plus fish can still be caught fishing from land. Once out on a boat though the fish go up in weight quite significantly and 20-30 pound sting rays are a common sight. Then there are octopus, wahoo, barracuda, hammerhead sharks and many others too.

If you don't want to spend a day or half a day on a boat then shore fishing in Fuerteventura is just enjoyable. You also have the freedom to come and go as you please when shore fishing and the only real difference is the size of the fish which you are likely to catch.
