The Thrilling Sport Of Key West Tarpon Fishing

By Nicole Guy

For an angler there is nothing more exciting than hooking a fish that puts up a real battle. That is why Key West tarpon fishing is so popular. This type of activity provides an experience that cannot be found elsewhere.

These fish can be found off the beach, around bridges, and in shallow flats. The methods used for this particular activity can vary. They can include plugging, trolling, drifting, and bottom or fly fishing. Many times places such as the bridges are fished at the time of a full moon.

Since April, May, and June are the times that these fish spawn offshore it is popular to fish in that location during those months. These fish can become huge and in 2003, an angler in Africa caught one weighting 286 pounds, 9 ounces. In Florida, one was caught in 1975 weighing 243 pounds. Females of this species can live as long as 50 years and males 30 years.

Especially during the spring months, there is a great opportunity to enjoy this sport by going on a charter boat to Key West Harbor. The boats have the proper gear and bait to be used especially for this particular species. There is nothing more exciting that to catch one of these beautiful 'Silver Kings'.

Strangely enough, this species is not only found in ocean water but in inland waters as well. Due to what is called a swim bladder they are able to breathe in both types of water. This bladder acts the same as human lungs.

key west tarpon fishing provides a thrill that will long be remembered. They travel in pods but have an unusual jaw that makes it difficult for a hook to 'set'. Large juvenile tarpon can be as long as two or more feet and these are not an edible fish.
