Good Key West Tarpon Guides Point Way To Great Fishing

By Gay Huffman

The state of Florida is one of the finest in the USA when it comes to providing anglers with great sport. Its inland fresh waters as well as its sun-warmed oceans provide super fish, but Key West tarpon guides can help a visitor to find some of the best fishing in the area. The tarpon, also known as the megalops, enjoys a reputation as one of the fiercest fighters in the whole fish world.

A guide will tell you that the tarpon is a large fish, with large specimens of 200 pounds having been recorded. Small fish are around 40 pounds in size, with the length varying from eight feet to five feet. Although fine sport, the megalops, as they are also known, do not make a good meal as they are very bony and do not taste good.

The megalops which Key West anglers catch are therefore not usually kept for the table but are released back into the wild. The swim bladder of a megalops means that it is a very adaptable fish, capable of migrating long distances. The swim bladder can function as an additional respiratory organ, allowing them to breathe air and survive in brackish waters, migrating quickly through a variety of environments.

In Key West, the megalops' migration peaks from March until early summer, around June or so. This is therefore the prime time of year to book a trip to the rich waters of the area. Anglers can catch fish of around 70 pounds in weight, though larger fish have been hooked; all will provide a great battle.

Anglers can use light tackle, spinners or flies to catch megalops, with the peak time of day to hunt them being early in the morning. If anglers are prepared to stay up late, they can also give good sport in the dark hours though. Using spinners attached to slowly sinking plugs can work well at night.

The best way to experience what these waters can offer is to consult some Key West tarpon guides and book a trip out there. Fishing for megalops is great fun, whatever the visitor's angling ability. Florida is a great place for an all-round vacation too. key west tarpon guides
