Bonefishing Key West Packs An Exciting Adrenalin Punch

Located at the southern-most tip of the Florida Keys at the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico, Key West is famous for being added with the home of Ernest Hemingway and for its bountiful fishing. Hemingway loved fishing. Today, thousands of visitors travel to the area each year to enjoy its balmy weather, azure waters and exciting fishing. Among the most popular fishing targets is bonefishing Key West. Both experienced and novice anglers consider this species one of the most exciting fly game species.

Bonefish are small, lean and lightning fast. They move so quick they are known the world over as the phantom ghost. Despite their small size, they are considered to pack a powerful punch of fly fishing excitement. Fly rods numbered 7 to 9 complete with a similarly sized reel, is typical tackle used when chasing bonefish.

Bonefish are found in the inshore waters of the tropics and sub-tropics around the world. They are most prolific around the Gulf of Mexico and love the Key West waters. Because they move in schools they are easy to spot. Their natural habitat is shallow water about one metre (three feet) deep but can be found in waters as shallow as 200 millimetres (eight inches). They are frequently chased by so-called flats anglers.

The natural habitat of bonefish is calm, shallow water less than about three feet deep. They generally move in schools and congregate in shallow waters ranging from eight inches to several feet. Targeting specific tide times is important to successfully landing bonefish.

Bonefish are found in the inshore or coastal waters of the tropical and sub-tropical zones around the world. However, they are most prolific along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Pacific Ocean. They love the waters around the Keys.

Anglers looking for a memorable experience might consider bonefishing Key West. The large areas of shallow sandy flats studded with thick turtle grass are an ideal environment for the species. Sight casting to feeding bonefish is the norm. The Florida Keys produces some of the largest and feistiest bonefish.
