How To Accomplish Key West Tarpon Fishing

By Rhea Solomon

There are many different kinds of sporting activities or means of earning a livelihood in which persons engage from time to time. Some of these activities occur on dry land, while some others are done in water, especially large bodies of water, like seas. The sea activities may, or may not involve sea life, and Key West tarpon fishing is one such event.

Tarpons are believed to be big fish from prehistoric times, and which present silver or brown sides, in accordance with their surroundings. Along with huge mouths and scales, the tarpons also boast a heavy bone structure which points upward. The unusual lungs which the tarpons possess, allow them to survive in shallow water, due to their ability to breathe oxygen above the water surface.

It would seem that as far as this sporting activity is concerned, both location and fish are a perfect match. It is believed that tarpons give fisher folk much thrill, because they fight back, thus generating acrobatic runs that pound the hearts and wrench the guts of participants. Such a spectacle is one worth seeing in the shallow, warm water enjoyed by the living and spawning fish.

Various methods are used in attempting to catch this fish in the sporting event. For example, there is light tackling which involves a live crab and a rod. In this activity, a live crab is placed on a spinning rod and thrown to a school of tarpons which mercilessly tackles it, thereby producing a thrilling show.

Fly fishing appears as another thriller, especially for fishers who are good anglers and are prepared to make an early start. It is felt that the intense nature of this fish tests the mettle of the angler, as well as his gear. Experienced anglers feel that positioning the boat being used makes a great difference in terms of how a fly is presented to the fish, since the fisher has to be able to enter the mind of the fish and think like it.

Even the equipment used needs to be of a special kind to go anywhere near this peculiar fish. For example, the rod should be within a particular weight range to be of any value, and its required matching reel should be well backed. Of significance, too, are the floating weight, the shock tippet, and leader system made from fluorocarbons, which are all employed in the double haul technique used for casting.

There are experienced anglers who are certified captains as well, and they are prepared to act as guides in the location. Such is their enthusiasm that they even accommodate novices at the sport, and they will gladly share their expertise and knowledge of catching the tarpons. These experts even go as far as providing the spinning tackles and the fly rods needed, and these are said to be of very high quality.

Key West tarpon fishing seems to be a sport that is firmly established, and very interesting as well as enjoyable. The activity appears to provide an exhilarating experience for those anglers who boast some expertise. Newcomers to the sport, nevertheless, should not be bypassed, since they are given the opportunity to learn from the enthusiastic guides.
