Antique Fishing Lures Are Gaining Collectible Popularity

By Amanda Baird

For many thousands of years, people have been fishing. This activity today is usually looked at as a recreational sport in the eyes of most people. Oddly enough, one area that has been growing the fastest in this popular sport is one that doesn't take place on the water, in the collecting of antique fishing lures. This has become a wealth of enjoyment for many hobbyists, or sometimes, an actual source of income.

Unlike the majority of modern equipment, which is usually produced on a massive scale, an older fishing lure is more than likely to be mostly handmade. Millions of collectors around the world now seek these unique items that are considered by many to be a art form. In fact, most are radically distinctive from any other similar item.

These pieces can be a source of variations that are nearly unlimited in assembly, colors and composition. Usually, they will be composed of materials other than plastic, they will be hand painted, and often are intricately constructed. Wide varieties of this kind of vintage tackle are no longer manufactured nor can be bought in popular retail stores.

While particularly rare lures can have great value, most collections are usually created for pleasure rather than monetary gain. Collectors will admit they admire these vintage items for their individual beauty, high quality and distinct craftsmanship. Whether a collection contains only a handful or hundreds of individual items, collectors truly love their lures.

The motivations for this type of collecting can be generated in a number of ways. Some of the major reasons someone could be drawn into these devices could include an interest in a certain aesthetic appeal, simple nostalgia and historical significance. As it is with any similar hobby, everyone has a tendency to express their own unique area of interest and separate reasoning for getting themselves involved.

For many of the people who share this specific interest, there can be emotional attractions that remind them of childhood memories. Some people might be fascinated by the history of a particular item. Some are drawn mainly to the physical appearance that is quite often lacking in modern manufactured tackle. Some may say that they do it because they simply like it. Regardless of where someone begins, collectors can easily get hooked on this hobby.

As it is with many other collectible items, there is much investment, competition and commitment in and about the community of lure collectors. Even when monetary value is not really a factor, this is surely a pursuit that is serious for those who do get involved. Once someone begins, it can suddenly become a matter of enjoyment, passion and culture.

For anyone who may be interested in becoming a collector of these exquisite antiques, there are numerous collection clubs, commercial dealers and various trading events that can be found on the Internet or in local publications. Some of the most prized objects can actually be found at yard sales and flea markets. As with all collectibles, one never knows where they might appear.

Whether someone views it as just a simple hobby or possibly a serious investment opportunity, non-fishermen as well as avid anglers have the potential to receive many pleasures from displaying, owning and collecting these antique fishing lures. Even though they can sometimes be hard to locate, millions of very serious collectors are certainly willing to share, trade or sell.
