How To Start Collecting Antique Fishing Lures

By Alison Wilcox

Fishing has long been a part of human history. This is why antique fishing lures go way back and many are now seeing these objects as something to be collected. Beginning your own collection will be a challenge because of your lack of experience. Here are some tips to get you started in this hobby.

Before you approach the sellers, arm yourself with knowledge. Read relevant books and other such publications so you know what to look for when you are faced with this object. Note who manufactured them, when they were made and other such important details. This can be helpful when you want to verify their authenticity.

Then find organizations that focus on these hobbies and join them. There is probably at least one in your community. If you cannot find one, then be a part of online communities. Being in a group will help you establish a network of experienced contacts. This will help increase your knowledge.

Go to the shows. There are many who do not go these types of events but these offer a good learning experience. You get to meet and talk to recognized figures in the hobby and you get to see what they have collected over the years. Check if there is any being held in your area.

Before you buy anything, it should undergo a thorough inspection. Determine if the object is the real thing and be aware of any defects that are present. If it is not possible to inspect the item, such as in long distance transactions, get high resolution photos. These photos should show the object in different perspectives.

You will ultimately have the power to decide what you should be buying. While it can be tempting to purchase the cheaper ones so you can get more, you should just go for the rarer and older items. Though the latter can be expensive, these are items you would be proud to have in your collection.

Sometimes, you may be offered an opportunity to trade. The trade may seem favorable on your end but it will still be advisable to get the opinion of other people. You may change your mind quick once an experienced collector points out the flaws in the agreement. Do not rush into any of these trading arrangements.

The price of the item will fluctuate because there are a number of factors that have to be considered when determining its worth. Age, its condition, and the demand for it are just some of the factors that can determine it value. Decide how much you are willing to pay for adding such an item to your collection. Try negotiating the price so you can get the most out of your money.

Antique fishing lures have become collectibles. Because of their variety and the general challenge of determining authenticity, you should take steps to prepare yourself before making a purchase. Research on the history of these objects and interact with more advanced collectors. Getting an expert opinion may also be a good idea when you want to trade or purchase an item.
