By Mona Moody

Finding an outdoor activity during the winter season can be very tricky especially if you are not into things like skating. Ice fishing is one thing that you can do to pass your time during this season. It may involve the fisherman sitting on the fishing site with his fish line or one can choose to employ the use of ice fishing traps in the process.

In order for one to set up a fish trap on top of ice, one must first equip himself with the right gear. Access to the underlying water mass is made via a hole. Drilling of this hole involves the use of tools such as the auger or manual cutting by the use of a saw. The size of the hole must not be too big or too small.

Use of correct tools in any procedure is important as it lessens the amount of effort to be applied. Augers are often used in drilling since they are quite effective and easy to use. However, if you prefer drilling your hole manually you can do so using a saw. Each trap is set up on its hole where a line fitted with a baited hook is lowered into the underlying water body for catching fish.

Fish traps are very readily available for purchase especially during the winter season. It is also during this time that they cost less since their sale and supply is highest. Most of these gadgets come with do it yourself manuals which help in guiding their users on how to install them. Therefore you can still use them even if it is your first time doing it.

There are laws which govern the number of traps ice fishermen can place in a given area. These laws vary with different areas and so it is important for one to check with relevant authorities if the intention to install more than a few of these devices. It is always advisable to ensure that you have a license before going out fishing.

Some traps are fitted with flags for the main purpose of signaling that something is on the hook. These flags are designed to slowly get lowered whenever something is pulling the hook line from below. Some may even make sounds as the flag is getting lowered. This way a fisherman is alerted that the trap has caught a fish and needs to be reset again.

Other special features about these traps include neon painting which helps their users to see them during the night. There is need for fishermen to be able to see their devices in case they decide to fish in the dark. Many gadgets can be very challenging to monitor if they are not painted with neon paints which are luminous at night.

There are those fishermen who would prefer to fish until late hours which may extend to the night. This means that these people must have a way that they can see and monitor their gadgets even when it is dark. Manufacturers of ice fishing traps have come up with a way of painting these gadgets neon paints so that they are visible even in the dark.
