Bonefishing Key West: Common Methods

By Annette Bishop

Through bonefishing Key West residents do not only provide themselves with food, but they also gain trade commodity that they can sell to other areas that are not blessed with bonefish. This boosts their health and also their livelihood. There are several methods that a fisherman can use to catch these fish.

Bonefish tend to habit shallow water or flats. A fisherman can hence use wading method to catch them. He or she should wade stealthily into the water and remain still for some time. The bonefish in the area will start making muds as they hunt for rays. The fisher man should them move his or her fly to the area where fish is and wait for a catch.

For a fisherman with a boat, he can use boat poling method on the flat. Once on board the boat, one allows the boat to move along the current. In this way, he or she will be able to come across several bone fish. Moving with water current allows one to be stealth and also easily control the boat.

Like most fish, bonefish tend to follow regular routes on any flat they habit. A fisherman can study this pattern and establish the route that the fish uses. He or she will then show up at that point at a time earlier than the time the fish follow it and wait for them. However, tides or season can cause a change to the trail. This method is called staking out.

Instead of staking out bonefish, one can decide to do chumming. In this method one chums water using small pieces of shrimps. Shrimps are cut into several pieces and the pieces are then scattered in the water near the fishing boat. Since bonefish also uses smell for hunting food, they will easily locate them. The shadow of the fisherman should not cast on the pieces.

Rod and line is also another method of bonefishing key west fisherman can employ. This method is more successful in areas where the water is shallow. One should ensure that he or she is using the right bait.
