Fishing For Black Marlin Makes A Great Outing

By Ben Pate

The Black marlin is a premiere game fish for sport fishermen. Recently the black marlin, which was previously known as Makaira indica, was re-classified as Istiompax indica. Although most commonly associated with the blue marlin, genetically it is most similarly related to the striped/white marlin. This re-classification also links it more closely with sailfish. No matter the classification Black Marlin fishing is a popular recreational activity.

Comparing Species

Genetically compared to the striped/white marlin and the sailfish, the black marlin are more solid than their blue counterparts. They have a shorter bill and a rounder and lower dorsal fin. They are also the only marlin from the marlin family to have rigid pectoral fins that are unable to be pressed flat against their immense body. Black Marlin fishing is just as fun as black marlin fishing.

What They Eat

Known as being very predatory, black marlin have an extensive diet comprised of many different things. They love tuna, cuttlefish, and other crustaceans. They will pretty much eat any fish smaller than them. This leaves the black marlin with a very extensive menu to choose from as it is one of the larger fish in the sea.

Black Marlin Fishing

Because of their size and their physique black marlin are popularly fished. Research off the coast of Australia suggests that the black marlin is much easier to catch around the full moon and the week afterwards. This is due to its prey moving to the surface layers which in turn forces the marlin to hunt in a wider area.

Warm Waters

Black marlin are also commonly found in the Pacific Ocean. Specifically, near the coasts of Australia and throughout the tropical waters of the indo-pacific. The can also be caught of the coasts of southern California and Chile. Black marlin prefer warmer waters and like to swim just beneath the surface, taunting fishermen. They can also, usually, be found swimming near underwater structures like coral reefs.

Fishing Tours

Black marlins are a favorite target for anglers all over the world due to the fact that they are able to put up such a good fight when they get hooked on a line. Some black marlin can grow to be over fifteen feet long and weigh up to as much as 1,4000 pounds. These are just some of the things fishermen dream about at night when they think about black marlin.
